Make sure you are getting your probiotics and prebiotics!
Easily boost your immunity with probiotics as summer dwindles down and school begins.
Probiotics are tiny microorganisms that symbiotically work with our bodies to improve gut health and therefore improve immunity to harmful bacteria (60-80 percent of our immune system is located in our digestive tract). It works by supplementing our bodies with the good bacteria to over compete with the bad bacteria, yeast, or fungi. The probiotics found in high quality supplements are the exact beneficial bacteria already present in our body, but in concentrated doses. Prebiotics are nondigestible carbohydrates that act as food for the probiotics.
Ways we “lose” good bacteria is by having a poor diet high in sugar, after taking prescription antibiotics (which wipe out ALL the bacteria in us, good and bad), drinking tap water, and emotional stress. The best way to get adequate amounts of probiotics for healthy gut functioning is to eliminate foods that feed harmful bacteria, increase probiotics supportive foods in our diet, and/or take a high quality pro- and pre-biotic supplement. The most effective way to increase probiotics in our diet is by eating fermented foods. That includes yogurt, sauerkraut, miso, kefir, pickles, kimchi, tempeh, kombucha, and any pickled vegetable. Not a fan of fermented food? Take a quick, easy supplement and remember you pay for quality. Things to look for when purchasing a probiotic supplement:
- Shelf stability with potency guaranteed (ones that do not need refrigeration)
- A high range of 3 to 50 billion CFUs (colony forming units)
- A diversity of strains (at least three different)
- Contains prebiotics as well
We at the office recommend, Dr Ohhira’s, which is a double whammy pre- and probiotic small in size. And be consistent with taking them! Have any questions? Feel free to call the Carlsbad office at (760) 720-0777 for any recommendations in quality products to use! We would be happy to help!
